Pakistan's  health minister announced on Monday that after testing positive for the novel coronavirus he has isolated himself.

Several leaders, including members of ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), have been diagnosed with Covid-19 infection over the past few months, as the virus continues to spread in Pakistan.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi tested positively last week and announced that he is quarantining at home.

Other political figures who have contracted the virus to date include National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, ex-PMs Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Yusuf Raza Gillani, National Assembly opposition leader, Shehbaz Sharif, Sindh Governor Imran Ismail, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader, Saeed Ghani, and railway minister Sheik Rashid, all recovered from the virus.

Many well-known figures have lost their fight against Covid-19 including a former governor, a provincial minister, and lawmakers.

According to the most recent official estimates, after the first case was registered in February 2,33,530 people have been testing positive for coronavirus across Pakistan.

However, the death toll has risen to 4,808 whereas 1,31,650 people have recovered, leaving 1,01,880 active cases in the country.
